- 1550: The troops of Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, with aid from the forces of the indigenous chief Michimalonco, defeat a much larger Mapuche army led by Toqui Ainavillo at the Battle of Penco in what is now Chile. Three years later, Valdivia is killed by a group of Mapuches during another confrontation between Spanish colonizers and indigenous people in the area.
- 1911: Mexican president Gustavo Díaz Ordáz is born in the state of Puebla.
- 1926: Minerva Mirabal, one of the three Mirabal Sisters assassinated during the rule of Dominican dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, is born in the former Salcedo Province.
- 1927: Raúl Alfonsín, who became the first democratically-elected president of Argentina after the demise of the country’s ruling military junta, is born in Chascomús, near Buenos Aires.
